We began the Perian project over 6 years ago. We wanted to simplify viewing your content. Our team has attained that goal and with that in mind, Perian will be retired soon. Our stewardship has been a blast but it's time for all of us to move on.
From the beginning we kept Perian simple. Our preferences were minimal, updating was easy, and we gradually grew the product to add in extras like subtitles and different formats. We've contributed a lot. Today, Perian stands as complete as it ever will be under our stewardship.
There are some projects that we never got to. As an example, we would have liked an official, flexible, and well-documented import API to speed up MKV. We hit a brick wall there. Still, we reached a great stopping point and Perian's installed userbase proves how valuable this tool became to so many people.
Starting 90 days after the final Perian release, we will no longer provide support. We'll wrap up our loose ends, pack up our bags, and move on to new and exciting projects.
Here's what our roadmap looks like:
- We will soon release the final version of Perian, including all the fixes we've worked on since the last release. It may -- or may not -- work on 10.8.
- We will post the source code to either Google Code or Github.

About Avi file
Similar to MP4, AVI is a multimedia format which stands for Audi Video Interleave. It is developed by Microsoft and popular for its supreme video quality. AVI is actually a container file, but it is generally referred to as format. Inside the container file are codecs used to compress and decompress video files. DivX and XviD are the codecs used in AVI files.
About QuickTime
QuickTime is a default player for Mac machines. It supports Mov; a file format designed by Apple and MP4; a generic video format compatible with most players.
In order for a media player to play a particular video, the internal codecs should be compatible. In other words, the player should support the codecs in the video file trying to be played. It is important to note that newer versions of QuickTime are made to support AVI files. However, some AVI files still cannot be played due to compatibility issues. Here are some methods you can use to play AVI files in your QuickTime player.

- Use VLC player
VLC is a universal media player capable of supporting most video formats and codecs. Download and install VLC player for MAC OS and try playing your AVI files.
2. Use Perian
Perian is a free and open source component for QuickTime player. It is designed to support popular video codecs. Install Perian and try to play your video files.
3. Install DivX codecs
DivX codec supports a variety of DivX and other formats which carry the .avi extension. Installing this codec will make your QuickTime player compatible with Avi file formats.
4. Convert AVI to MOV file
If none of the above methods work, you can try converting your AVI file to MOV using reliable converters.
